BANGOR – Josh Berard buried six shots from behind the arc and finished with a team-high 20 points as Central Maine Community College defeated Southern Maine Community College, 70-65, in the Maine Small College Championships Sunday.
Southern Maine held a slim 33-29 lead at the half, but that lead quickly faded as the two teams went back and forth for the remainder of the game.
The second half was tight throughout as the combatants fought to a 57-57 tie after regulation. CMCC took advantage of key plays in the OT to claim the win. Chris Brackett tossed in 19 points for the Huskies, while Chris Haydens added 11.
Berard along with teammate Brian Callahan were named to the all tournament team following the win. SMCC was led by Jeremy Bennet with 16 points, while Steve Patrick and Matt Ouellette added 12 apiece.
Women’s basketball
CMCC 60, SMCC 58
BANGOR – Jessica Newton tallied a team-high 24 points to lead the CMCC women to a 60-58 overtime win over Southern Maine Community College in the Maine Small College Championships Sunday.
Newton’s 24 points was highlighted by her seven 3-pointers.
Central Maine clung to a one-point (31-30) lead going into the half. Johanna Gilbert led all scorers with 26 for SMCC. The game was tied at 58 at the end of regulation, but Central Maine scored the lone bucket and then held off the Southern Maine offense to secure the win.
