LIVERMORE FALLS – A brother and sister have given up good paying jobs and shift work for long hours and the chance to spend more time with family.

Heather Foss of Jay and Travis White of Livermore Falls along with their families took over Rosy’s Variety, a convenience store that also provides takeout food, on Main Street Monday.

White, 33, gave up a job at Tambrands Inc. in Auburn and Foss, 29, gave up her job at International Paper in Jay and bought the store from Petra and Ken Jacques.

“It’s a good opportunity to work together and take over a local store in the community that’s running good,” White said. “We’re either going to sink or swim.”

They’re hoping they’ll swim.

Both are prepared to work long hours.

White said he has 70 hours this week, his sister 60 hours.

It’s the only way you’re going to make money, White said.

A big commitment?

“Oh yeah,” White said.

While White stocked the soda cooler, his sister worked behind the counter cooking a breakfast sandwich for a customer.

Foss said she’s looking forward to seeing her two children more. Working shift work cut into family time, she said.

Foss is experienced in preparing food. She worked for R-N-K’s Main Street Pizzeria for eight years.

The family team has come up with new ideas.

They’ll offer a 20-inch pizza that will cost $10.50 for a cheese pizza and increase in increments of $1.50 for additional toppings.

“That’s a honkin’ pizza,” Foss said.

A personal 7-inch pizza will also be offered.

The store is also going to start opening longer March 1 from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.

The siblings’ mother, Evelyn Chabot, will help out at the store when needed, Foss said.

“She’ll be a lifesaver,” she said.
