PARIS – Police arrested a 43-year-old Paris man on Friday charging him with stealing more than $100,000 from his grandmother.

Gary E. Powers of 381 Hebron Road was charged with a Class B felony of theft, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Paris police Sgt. Michael Dailey said the thefts began the day after Powers received power of attorney over the accounts of Mary Powers, 87.

Powers took control of the accounts on June 17, 2003. Dailey said a withdrawal for $12,000 was made on June 18.

He said all except about $2,000 was taken from bank accounts of $80,000 and $18,000. Another $10,000 in cash was missing from a safety deposit box.

Dailey said the family notified the police of possible irregularities when Androscoggin Bank contacted a member saying the grandmother faced a penalty for early withdrawal of her $18,000 certificate of deposit account.

“The family notified us and we immediately began investigating,” Dailey said.

“Powers made a statement that he needed money to get by.”

Dailey said police were still investigating as all records have not been received.

Powers was booked at the Oxford County Jail, with bail set at $25,000 in real estate.
