AUBURN – “Fast and Furious,” the title of a recent hit movie, would surely define Edward Little’s hockey philosophy.
Senior Colby Gilbert took the opening faceoff and found a streaking Kyle Smith down the right side.
He promptly buried the puck in the lower left side of the Dragons goal just four seconds into the game, setting the tone for what was to come as the Red Eddies skated to a 7-1 victory over Brunswick in an Eastern Maine Class A quarterfinal hockey action Monday evening.
“That’s a set play that we practice all the time,” said Gilbert. “I push the puck to the neutral zone and just listen to what Kyle says and go with it.”
“We use that play each time we face off trying to catch the defense off guard, and tonight it worked perfectly,” said Smith.
Smith tallied the eventual game-winning shot just six minutes later, converting a feed from Joel Pepin again to the lower left corner of the goal, leaving the Dragons reeling. “I was extremely happy with the intensity that we showed, ” said head coach Jamie Belleau. “We’ve had a week long layoff and I was afraid we might be a little sluggish.”
Brunswick appeared relieved to have escaped the first period after surrendering a pair of goals. That relief would be short-lived though as senior forward Dave Roberge took a pass from Jackson Keene in front of the Dragons goal and blasted the Eddies’ third unanswered goal at 6:43 of the second period.
“We gave it our all, but we’re just not up the level of Edward Little, yet,” said Dragons head coach Mike Rauthier.”
Smith launched his third goal next at 8:39 for the hat trick, and Gilbert found the back of the net with just over a minute left in the second period. Brunswick never fully recovered from EL’s rapid fire attack.
The Dragons finally solved the Eddies’ defense as Brent Cardali beat goalie Kris Bennet (10 saves on 11 shots), converting a pass from Derek Parquet at 4:24 of the third period to avoid the shutout.
Gilbert and Matt Nadeau finished off the scoring for Edward Little, sandwiching a goal each around the Dragons’ lone goal.
The Eddies will face off Saturday against the winner of the Mt. Ararat or Waterville game.
