RUMFORD – Chris Gorham, a special education technician at Mountain Valley High School, has been appointed interim athletic director.

Superintendent Jim Hodgkin said the Hanover resident, who has been with the district for about a year, began his duties on Tuesday.

The SAD 43 board approved Hodgkin’s intention to appoint an interim director at Monday’s meeting.

Gorham replaces long-time athletic director Tim McInnis who resigned last month. McInnis had also taught two math classes per semester.

Hodgkin said Gorham had substitute taught in the district for several years before taking the educational technician position last fall. His background includes coaching and certification as a basketball official.

Hodgkin said the position, which has been -time for several years, may be increased to full-time next year. That position will be advertised in the spring.

If expanded to full-time, Hodgkin said the athletic director position could include coordination of all sports in grades 7-12 and possibly oversight of other student activities.

Right now, the athletic director coordinates sports for grades 9-12.

“Most schools our size have full-time athletic directors,” said Hodgkin.

Gorham’s educational technician position will be reduced 90-minutes a day for the remainder of the school year.
