1906 – 2004

FARMINGTON – Alton Roscoe Rowe, known as “Rocky”, 97, of Jay, passed away early Saturday morning, Feb. 28, at the Edgewood Rehabilitation and Living Center where he had been a resident since December.

He was born at Bean’s Corner in Jay, Nov. 20, 1906, a son of Fred M. and Fannie Allen Rowe. He lived all his life at Bean’s Corner and was a graduate of Wilton Academy. In 1933, he received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Education from the University of Illinois where he majored in Mathematics. On Sept. 19, 1936, he married Thelma Alice Wing. She died in March of 1999.

He was employed at Frary Woodturning in Dryden and later worked at GH Bass in Wilton. He was a member of the Bean’s Corner Baptist Church where in past years, he served on the Board of Deacons and on the Board of Trustees. For many years, he had a large vegetable garden and generously shared the yield with others. He also was a sports fan and enjoyed watching professional and college sports on television.

He is survived by a son, Waldron “Sonny” Rowe of Jay; a daughter, Lorraine Allaby of North Kingstown, RI; two grandchildren, Craig Allaby of Norwich, Conn. and Heather Buckley of East Greenwich, R.I.; and one great-grandson, Steven J. Allaby of Norwich, Conn.

He was predeceased by his wife; a brother, Cecil Allen Rowe; and a sister, Gwendolyn Masterman.
