LEWISTON – Councilors will consider costs for a proposed $2.4 million library expansion Tuesday.

The library could begin renovations in April, expanding into the rest of the Pilsbury Block buildings at the corner of Lisbon and Pine streets, if councilors approve.

The lowest bid for the expansion came in about $300,000 higher than the budget, but Director Rick Speer said he has identified five possible cuts in the project. Those range from doing away with a historical records archive to tiling floors differently.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Lewiston City Hall.

The renovation would give the Lewiston Public Library an expanded fiction section, a bright first-floor lobby, a second-floor historical records archive and a third-floor meeting and performance space with room for 150 people.

Last year, councilors directed Speer and the library to solicit donations to help pay for the work. Speer said the library board has raised about $120,000 so far.
