RUMFORD – Last year’s Family Field Day was such a resounding success, that the Rumford Polar Bears Snowmobile Club has decided to make the affair an annual event. The date for this year’s Field Day is March 6. It will be open to the entire community and is an occasion for snowmobilers and non-snowmobilers to gather for food, fun and games for the entire family.

The Earnest Phillips and Jim Powers fields on the South Rumford Road will be the location for the Field Day. The fields are situated across the Androscoggin River from McDonald’s Restaurant, and can be accessed by automobile and snowmobile.

Diane Mitchell and her workers will be creating a giant snow-sculpture/slide for young and old to enjoy. Last year’s Polar Bear Slide was busy throughout the day.

The day’s events will begin at 9 a.m. with a snowmobile Poker Run. Participants will be able to begin the Poker Run any time between 9 a.m. and noon. The entry free is $5. The first place winner will get 40 percent of the pot, and the second place winner will receive 20 percent. Coffee and donuts will be for sale beginning at 9 a.m.

Starting at 11 a.m. Gary Clement and Chris Dickson will be organizing a variety of snowmobile oriented games that everyone can enjoy. To ensure a safe and fair competition, all games will utilize a club trail grooming snowmobile. There will be a ball and broom race, spoon and ping-pong ball carry and a reverse race.

Also, for the youngsters, there will be a three-legged race, tic-tac-toe in the snow, a ring-toss game, and balloon animals, under the supervision of Diane Mitchell. There will be goody bags for the little ones, too.

Lunch will be available from 11:30 a.m. until sold out. The meal will consist of a hot dog and roll, homemade beef stew and a biscuit, potato chips, homemade chocolate chip cookies and a beverage (coffee, soda or hot chocolate). Cost for adults is $4 and $2 for children 12 and under, and will be free for children age 5 and under. Homemade whoopie pies will also be available for $1 each.

At 1 p.m. there will be a ceremony to announce the person selected to receive special recognition for his or her years of volunteerism to the Rumford Polar Bears Snowmobile Club.

Something new this year, weather permitting, and if there are enough participants, is a snow-sculpting contest. Judging of the snow sculpture entries will take place during the day. The winner will receive a cash prize.

Other happenings at the Field Day will be recorded music, a bonfire, a display of the club’s trail grooming equipment, and rides in the club’s new Tucker groomer. Porta Potties will be available on site.
