PERU – Six Guilford Transportation Industries freight cars derailed off the Maine Central Railroad line Sunday between Canton and Rumford.

Oxford County Emergency Management Agency Director Dan Schorr said Monday morning that no one was injured in the accident. He also said that because the cars were not carrying hazardous materials, no emergency support crews were needed.

Calls to Guilford Transportation Industries’ freight carrier – Guilford Rail System in North Billerica, Mass. – were not returned.

In addition to the lined-up rail cars – including one that had rolled onto its side – a length of what appears to be a damaged track rail, and fragments of wooden ties lay between the railroad tracks and overturned undercarriages of wheels.

Guilford Transportation moves freight on the rails through its Guilford Rail System, which operates more than 1,600 miles of track in Maine, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

The rail system largely consists of former Boston & Maine, Maine Central, and Springfield Terminal railroads.
