I hope all taxpayers are paying attention to what is going on right now in Maine. Citizens of this great state have been telling the gang in Augusta to do something about taxes in general and property taxes specifically. Until recently, those demands have been largely ignored.

Now, thanks in part to the 1A folks and Carol Palesky, the gang in Augusta must deal with this issue. So let us look at the response thus far. Here are the reasons why we can’t have this type of tax relief, according to various elected officials:

Paying a mandated 55 percent of education would cost too much;

capping property taxes would cost too much;

either of the above would inevitably result in higher sales taxes.

None of those are reasons, but rather scare tactics to convince us to continue to pony up for the excesses of government at all levels. Watch your property valuations spike if any kind of tax relief is voted in.

I hope we are getting near the point, as taxpayers, where we say, “This is how much money you have to operate on. Deal with it!”

Why does everyone in government office need an assistant? Why do we waste taxpayer money on the pork that never seems to satisfy the hunger of the bureaucratic swine.

Let us start right now by saying, “Enough,” through our various town meetings and then again at election time. It is time for us to retake our government now.
