LISBON – The Phillip W. Sugg Middle School Band recently participated in a performance at the State Capitol in Augusta. The band, invited by Rep. Robert Berube and Rep. Michael Vaughan, also appeared as part of Music Education Awareness Day at the Capitol, which was sponsored by the Maine Music Educators Association.

The band performed a 45-minute concert in the rotunda prior to the start of the legislative session, with parents, legislators and music educators attending.

Among the pieces performed were the “Troika” by Prokofiev, excerpts from “New World Symphony” by Dvorak, and the “Lisbon Bicentennial March,” which was composed for Lisbon’s 200th anniversary.

After the concert, the band proceeded into the legislative chamber, where they played the “Star Spangled Banner” prior to the start of the legislative session.

Berube said, “It was with great pride that I enjoyed the Sugg Middle School Band’s

compositions. Having individuals from our communities participate in the opening ceremonies adds a lot to the sometimes long and drawn-out process of the Legislature.”

The next performance for the Sugg Band will be at the Lisbon Music Night at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 18, in the Lisbon High School Gym.
