GORHAM – Sophomores Tiffany Jones and Ashley Marble both scored their 1000th career point as Southern Maine gained momentum in the second half to register an 80-57 victory over Salem State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday afternoon.

Following a closely embattled first half that saw six lead changes, the Huskies (29-1) opened the second stanza with an 11-2 run to define the tempo in the final stages. To compliment Jones’ game-high 23 points, senior Jen Webster contributed 22 points and a game-high nine rebounds with Megan Myles of Turner.

The Vikings (24-4) were paced by Meghan DePatsy’s 17 points, while freshman Jennifer Tamilio added 12 points.

Bowdoin 57,

Salve Regina 44

BRUNSWICK – Top-ranked Bowdoin forced 28 turnovers and used a 17-2 run in the second half to take a 57-44 win over Salve Regina in the second round of the NCAA Div. III Women’s Basketball Tournament.

After a cold start, the Polar Bears (27-0) closed the half on a 10-4 run to take a 20-13 edge at intermission. Bowdoin eventually took a 21 point lead before a handful of late three-pointers from the Seahawks (24-6) cut the final to 13.

Eileen Flaherty recorded 15 points and six rebounds, while Lora Trenkle had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Polar Bears.

Bowdoin made 18 steals and out-rebounded Salve 23-6 on the offensive glass.

Maine 61, Hartford 40

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior Heather Ernest scored a game-high 14 points to lead the University of Maine to a 61-40 victory over Hartford in the regular-season finale.

Maine will be the top seed in the America East tournament.

The Black Bears (22-6) held the Hawks to two points over the first five minutes of the game, while Maine scored 13 points. Maine closed the half with a 32-17 lead.

After the Hawks (18-11) scored the first basket of the second frame, Maine went on an 18-4 run to build its lead to 50-23, the largest of the contest.

Men’s hockey
Trinity 4, Colby 2

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Trinity scored three unanswered goals in the third period to snap up a 4-2 victory from Colby and earn a return trip to the

NESCAC championship.

The Mules (14-7-4) took a 1-0 lead at 12:42 of the first period as Evan Kearns redirected a shot from Todd O’Hara. The Bantams (16-8-1) tied up the contest less than two minutes later on a two-on-one break and a flick by Ryan Stevens into a wide open net.

Patrick Walsh regained the lead for Colby with a goal at the 6:25 mark of the third frame. However, John Halverson responded 26 seconds later to even up the match, before Adam Ladd netted a pair of goals.

Women’s hockey
Maine 5, Connecticut 1

STORRS, Conn. – The University of Maine women’s hockey team scored three special teams goals in the first period and went

on the defeat Connecticut

5-1 to clinch a playoff berth in the Hockey East Tournament.

Tristan Desmet opened the scoring on a power play at 4:30 of the first period. Maine killed off three consecutive power plays, before Karen Droog put the Black Bears (11-15-4) up 2-0. Freshman Sonia Corriveau scored a short-handed goal for the third tally of the period.

The Huskies (8-9-2) posted their first goal at 7:42 of the second period when Caitlin Salazer-Reid converted assists from Erika Spacth and Angie Wallace. Maine responded with goals from Cheryl White and Meagan Aarts to seal the win.

Senior goalie Lara Smart had an outstanding game with 49 saves for the Black Bears.

Bowdoin 6, Hamilton 0

BRUNSWICK – Meghan Gillis scored a hat trick to lead Bowdoin to a 6-0 win over Hamilton in women’s hockey action Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (19-4-1) opened up the scoring early in the first as Marissa O’Neil converted a pass from Britney Carr in front of the net. The Continentals (11-13-1) had their best scoring opportunity later in the frame vanquished by the quick glove of Bowdoin’s goalie, Natalie Morgan.

Gillis completed her hat trick when she skated past two defenders and put the puck over the glove of Hamilton’s goalie. Mary Kate Wheeler and Kelsey Wilcox provided extra padding for the Polar Bears down the stretch with a goal apiece.
