AUBURN – A Canton man is facing charges after driving the wrong way on Route 4 Friday evening.

Michael A. Burdick, 35, of Route 219, Canton, is facing a charge of operating under the influence after allegedly driving his white 1986 GMC van into on-coming traffic as he made his way from Turner into Auburn.

“We received several complaints about a vehicle driving all over the road on Route 4, nearly striking several other vehicles head on,” said Sgt. James Jakes of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department. The complaint calls started coming in around 6:30 p.m.

The van nearly collided with one vehicle at Waterman Road in Auburn before crossing both lanes of traffic and sideswiping a 1993 Ford driven by Stephanie Dow, 38, of Turner. The collision caused $2,000 in damage to the Ford and $1,500 to the van.

Police stopped Burdick near the Getty station at Turner and Center streets where the arrest was made.

“There were several close calls,” said Jakes. “Luckily, no one was injured.”
