LEWISTON – The city of Lewiston is accepting applications for the annual $500 Alfred A. Plourde Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship, in memory of one of Lewiston’s most popular mayors, was established in 1990 and is awarded each year to the Lewiston High School senior who is pursuing a post-secondary education and shows the most interest and promise in a public service career.
The deadline is April 15, and an application must consist of an essay of 1,000 words or less on “The Role of the Young Political Leader in the New Millennium”; a high school transcript copy; a statement of public service career goal and major in post-secondary education; and name, address and phone number.
Mayor Lionel C. Guay Jr. will narrow down the applicants to three finalists, and the winning senior will be selected by the Lewiston City Council. Specific identifying information will be removed at the time of selection to ensure objectivity. The award will be presented to the winning senior at the May 4 City Council meeting.
Applications and questions should be directed to Community Relations Coordinator Dottie Perham-Whittier, city administrator’s office, Lewiston City Hall, 27 Pine St., Lewiston ME 04240; 784-2951, ext. 110; or [email protected].
