FARMINGTON – Performers are needed for the 17th annual Nordica Celebration of the Arts at the University of Maine at Farmington. This performing arts event celebrates women’s contribution to the arts.
Organizers of the event are seeking a variety of performances to go along with this year’s theme of Infinite Mischief. Women and men from the UMF community and beyond are invited to submit proposals to present creative writing, drama, music, dance compositions and cross-genre collaborations. In selecting the evening’s program, organizers will look to balance student, faculty and community representation as well as artistic genres.
The deadline to submit performance proposals is March 15. Proposal forms may be picked up in the Women’s Studies Center in 12 Ricker Hall on the UMF campus or may be requested by e-mailing: [email protected]. Completed proposals may be mailed or delivered to the Women’s Studies Center, 12 Ricker Hall, UMF, 111 South St. Farmington, ME 04938.
The performance will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 11, in Nordica Auditorium, on the second floor of UMF’s Merrill Hall.
The celebration was inspired by Farmington’s own opera diva, Lillian Nordica, who was born in 1857. At age 20, Nordica became the sensation of Europe. For 35 years she sustained a brilliant operatic career. In 1911, a year before her death, she returned to her hometown and gave a concert in the auditorium that has since been named for her.
