Voters pass all 49 articles at packed town meeting

RANGELEY PLANTATION – Without an empty seat in the house, 43 voters in Rangeley Plantation passed 48 of 49 warrant articles unanimously.

Article 49, which involved appropriating $4,000 for E-911 signs, passed unanimously, but the sign color choice left some residents unhappy. Red, as opposed to green, brown or blue, won with 18 votes.

Ken Haley moderated the evening meeting where Town Clerk Carole Haley, Assessor Anne Cooper, school committee member Elizabeth Swiney, Park Commissioner George Haley and Animal Control Officer Cary Keep were re-elected. Jason Swiney will replace George Haley, who has served the town for 40 years, as road commissioner.

Rangeley Plantation appropriated $180,000 to support Rangeley Lakes Regional School, $30,000 for road maintenance and $25,000 for winter road maintenance. The transfer station was appropriated $30,000.

Rangeley Fire Chief Rudy Davis gave a report on fire calls during the last three fiscal years. The plantation pays 11 percent of the Rangeley Fire Department budget and appropriated $17,974 for it.

Rangeley Plantation will continue to contract for ambulance services through the town of Rangeley at a cost of $23,545 for fiscal year 2004. For the period January to December 2003, Rangeley Plantation had 24 ambulance calls. In total, the Rangeley Ambulance Service responded to 250 calls.

The plantation voted to raise an additional $10,000 for a salt/sand building, bringing the town’s reserve account for the building to $100,000. The plantation will purchase a new Mack 10-wheeler truck and plow gear at a cost of $114,210; the costs for the purchase will come from the town’s reserve account.

The town will support the following nonprofits in the coming year: Rangeley Region Health Center, annual Shriners parade, Rangeley Logging Museum Festival, Rangeley Lakes Cross-Country Ski Club, Sexual Assault Victims Emergency Services, Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust’s invasive plants and water quality protection program, veteran’s monument project, Rangeley Region Guides and Sportsmen, Meals for the Elderly, and the Rangeley Region Health Appointment Transportation.
