SABATTUS – Now it’s official. A recount didn’t change the outcome of the race for road commissioner Wednesday night.
James A. Wood defeated John H. Hyde 150-148.
Hyde’s residency in Bowdoin generated controversy with some town residents during the campaign. The town does not prohibit nonresidents from running for road commissioner. Hyde, however, could not vote for himself.
If he lived in Sabattus, and with his own and his wife’s votes, he would have tied Wood at the polls.
Hyde requested the recount. When it was over, he said he wants to move ahead. “I’ve been working for the town right along for 10 years, so people in the town know me,” said Hyde, who is a crew foreman for the Sabattus Public Works Department.
“I’ve known Jim for years, so I don’t have any problem working for him,” he said.
Wood, who served as road commissioner from 1985 to 1991, will take over the department from Dennis Atwood, who chose not to run this year.
The other candidates in the four-way race for road commissioner were Randolph Gayton who received 46 votes and Timothy Riendeau with 16 votes
There were no disputed votes. One spoiled ballot, sealed during the election on March 5, was not opened. Atwood received five write-in votes.
“I’m glad that there was nothing disputed here,” said Town Clerk Robin Dulac.
