1915 – 2004

MONMOUTH – Helen Louise Carleton Anderson of 42 Anderson Road, Monmouth, died at her home March 9, after a long and fulfilling life.

Born in Plymouth, Mass., on Aug. 15, 1915, she was the daughter of Helen Bourne Carleton and Harold Carleton. She was the widow of Charles Wilbur Anderson with whom she shared 62 years.

She was a graduate of Norwood Massachusetts High School, Farmington Normal School and University of Maine in Orono. She taught elementary school for 34 years in Greene, Wales, Monmouth, Lewiston, and Winthrop. She taught her own daughters in first and second grade in Monmouth.

She was a member of Maine State Retired Teachers, Androscoggin Retired Teachers and the First Friday Club of Monmouth.

Family was the center of her life and she was a doting grandmother. Among her happiest moments were the years her grandchildren spent their childhood weekends with their grandparents, culminating in Sunday dinner with the entire family. Once you met her you became a lifelong friend. She sent and received hundreds of cards during Christmas holidays and acknowledged every birthday, anniversary and holiday. As her health failed, one of the things she missed the most was the monthly card shopping trips. Her family, friends and Hallmark will all miss her.

The family wishes to express their thanks and gratitude to Connie Kimberling, a very special friend, and Hospice for their invaluable and sensitive assistance. You are truly Angels on Earth.

She is survived by a daughter, Judy Powers and her husband, David of Monmouth, a daughter, Carole Gardner and her partner, Roger Knauff of Winthrop; granddaughter, Kristen Powers of Monmouth, granddaughter, Shelli Pelletier and husband Paul of Canton; grandson, Brian Gardner and wife Michelle of Brooksville, Fla., grandson, Jeff Gardner and wife Hazar of Palm Harbor, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Natalie, Nicholas and Keeley all of Florida; sister-in-law, Marjorie Ham of Monmouth; aunt, Angie Worcester of Brockton, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Wilbur; and two brothers, Earle and Bill Carleton.
