MEXICO – Nomination papers for a variety of elected positions are now available at the town office.

Elections take place June 8.

Open positions this year are for three selectmen. Reggie Arsenault and Monique Aniel are expected to run for three-year terms again. Aniel will be seeking her first, full three-year term. She was elected to finish out the term started by former Selectman Robert Lyons last year.

A two-year seat, resulting from the unexpected death of former Selectman Louise Waterhouse, is also available.

The SAD 43 seats currently occupied by board members Betty Barrett and Peter Zanoni are also up this year.

Those interested in running for any of the seats must gather a minimum of 25 signatures from registered Mexico voters. Nomination papers must be turned in by April 23.

The town office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. This year’s annual town meeting is set for Monday, June 7, at the Mexico Recreation Center.

Byron:

7 interested in board

BYRON – Seven people have stepped forward to serve on the town’s newly rejuvenated Planning Board.

The board will spend the next few months writing a subdivision ordinance. The need for such an ordinance, which will give the town more control over land use, was discussed at this week’s annual town meeting.

At that meeting, a moratorium on any new subdivisions was overwhelmingly approved by residents. Selectman Steve Duguay had said that he has received a number of inquiries about subdividing land. With few rules governing such land use, the town decided it was time to draw up an ordinance.

A proposed subdivision ordinance will likely be ready for town approval within a year. The Planning Board will also begin writing a comprehensive plan. Work on such a plan began more than a dozen years ago, but the document was never completed or adopted. Town treasurer and Planning Board member Melissa Plourde said John Maloney of the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments will likely help guide the board during the writing of the two documents.

The Planning Board meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of each month at the town office. Residents are invited to attend and bring ideas on how they’d like to see their town grow.

Planning Board members are: Chairman David Duguay, co-secretaries Plourde and Town Clerk Rosie White, MeadWestvaco employee Sonny Gestaut, self-employed electrician Bob Susbury, SAD 43 board member Anne Simmons-Edmunds, and her husband, Chris Edmunds.
