A new fitness program for the River Valley has information

about exercise.

RUMFORD – Dig out those walking shoes, that swimsuit or garden hoe. With spring nearly here, it’s time for many to get moving.

That’s the thought from Sarah Coolidge of Project NOW, a nonprofit affiliated with the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition that’s sponsoring a spring fitness program.

“This is the first program of this kind from Project NOW. The idea is to get people moving,” she said.

To help make it easier to get outside, or inside, and get in some exercise, Project NOW is offering incentives as well as an easy way to keep track of progress.

At the kickoff set for Thursday, April 1, at Mountain Valley High School, information on a variety of exercise opportunities, such as maps for area walking routes; data from the area’s wellness teams; Taking Off Pounds Sensibly representatives; and others will be available.

The eight-week program provides the paperwork for keeping track of exercise minutes achieved. The first 100 registrants will receive free, exercise-related gifts. People don’t have to attend the kickoff event to participate.

Instead, they can pick up applications at most schools and some businesses in the River Valley and Bethel area, and at Project NOW office on 94 River St.

Those who complete the eight-week program are eligible for a variety of prizes, many donated by area businesses. Project NOW is also encouraging workplace teams to participate. The business that logs the most exercise minutes will get a special trophy for its efforts.

The program, though, is not about prizes. It’s about getting people to exercise.

Project NOW was established with grant monies to prevent or reduce tobacco use, improve nutrition and to encourage exercise as ways to improve health.

“If someone is just starting an exercise program, this is a good beginning,” said Coolidge.
