FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -Keith Foulke pitched a perfect inning in his Boston spring debut and David Ortiz hit his third homer, leading the Red Sox over the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 Friday.
Hideo Nomo’s ERA rose from 7.94 to 8.31. He allowed three runs, four hits and four walks in three innings, giving up Ortiz’s two-run homer in the first. Ortiz also had an RBI single in the two-run third for his sixth hit in 12 at-bats.
Foulke, who led the AL with 43 saves for Oakland last year, retired Shawn Green on a groundout to second, Juan Encarnacion on a fly to deep center and Robin Ventura on another grounder to second.
“It felt a little sloppy,” said Foulke, who signed a four-year contract that guarantees him $24 million. “You get three outs, that’s what you’re out there for. But I want to be a lot sharper than that.”
Boston manager Terry Francona said Foulke, who threw 10 of 12 pitches for strikes, is a perfectionist.
“I don’t think he expects to make a bad pitch. I was really pleased with how he threw,” Francona said.
He’s also impressed with Ortiz, who was fifth in AL MVP voting and third in the league in slugging percentage in his first year with Boston.
“I didn’t realize quite how strong he was, how much thunder’s in that bat,” Francona said.
Boston starter Tim Wakefield got the victory with three shutout innings. Los Angeles’ only run came off Alan Embree in the fifth on consecutive singles by Wilkin Ruan, Jose Hernandez and Cesar Izturis.
Darren Dreifort, Paul Shuey, Tom Martin and Agustin Montero each pitched a scoreless inning after Nomo. Jason Frasor allowed a run in the seventh.
Notes: Boston INF and former Sea Dog Cesar Crespo, a longshot to make the team, is 7-for-15 with six runs after going 2-for-2 with two runs Friday. … Izturis went 3-for-3 after coming into the game at 3-for-14.
