DURHAM, N.H. – Colin MacDonald scored at 2:49 of overtime to lift Providence to a 4-3 win against New Hampshire on Friday and tie their best-of-three Hockey East quarterfinal series.
Providence (16-13-7) converted a 2-on-1 breakaway into the game-winning goal when Bill McCreary carried the puck into the left circle and centered it to MacDonald in the slot. He faked a shot then tucked the puck inside the right post.
New Hampshire (19-13-6) started the scoring in the first when Jacob Micflikier’s shot from the right circle sailed into the open right side of the net. But Providence matched the Wildcats goal for goal, tying it at 3 in the third period when Torry Gajda scored off a rebound.
UMass 3, Mass-Lowell 1
AMHERST, Mass. – Massachusetts advanced to the Hockey East semifinals with a 3-1 win over UMass-Lowell on Friday night.
Tim Warner made 22 saves for UMass-Amherst (18-11-6), which won the best-of-three quarterfinal series 2-0. John Yaros made 21 saves for UMass-Lowell (10-23-7).
The game was tied 1-1 when Dusty Demianiuk put the Minutemen ahead with a goal at 12:12 of the second period. Greg Maudlin added a goal at 14:36 of the third period.
BC 4, BU 0
BOSTON – Ryan Shannon scored two goals to lead Boston College to a 4-0 win over Boston University on Friday night, forcing a deciding third game in their Hockey East quarterfinal series.
The two city rivals will meet again Saturday night.
Matti Kaltiainen made 14 saves to earn the shutout for top-seeded BC (27-7-4). Sean Fields made 37 saves in a losing effort for BU (11-16-9), which was outshot 41-14. The eighth-seeded Terriers won the first game in the series 3-2, despite being outshot 30-10.
Shannon scored twice in the first period, on a power play at 10:09 and again at 16:51.
Ned Havern and Tony Voce added third-period goals for Boston College.
