CARTHAGE – Deputies have recovered a collector’s gun that was reported stolen from a Carthage residence in February.

No arrests have been made, but police have questioned two teenagers from Dixfield and Carthage.

Franklin County Sheriff’s Detective Tom White said a Carthage resident reported Feb. 4 that a rifle and a shotgun were stolen from his residence on River Road. The hunter had put the guns away in a closet in November.

White said the owner of the guns didn’t have the serial number so deputies concentrated on finding the Winchester .358 caliber rifle, which is a rare gun.

Messages were sent to police around the state trying to locate a gun.

Cpl. Steve Charles received some information that led to a Dixfield teenager, White said.

When the teen was questioned,White said, he had nothing to do with the missing guns.

A gun shop owner in Buckfield called deputies to say he had the missing guns last weekend, White said.

The gun shop owner did all the right things, White said.

White said charges are expected to be filed against Dixfield and Carthage teens.
