Sports take on a whole new dimension on the water. From surfing to snorkeling in oceans to rivers, there’s lots of fun activities for every type of water environment. Even if you know how to swim, you still have to remember to be safe. The American Red Cross offers these tips:

Beach safety

• Watch children around any water environment.

• Select a supervised area. A trained lifeguard can help you if an emergency arises.

• Never be on or in water alone.

• Select an area that’s clean and well-maintained, with a clean bathhouse, restroom and litter-free area.

• Make sure the water quality and natural conditions are safe. Hazards include murky water, hidden underwater objects and unexpected drop-offs.

• Before diving in headfirst, make sure that the water is deep enough.

• nspect any rafts and docks to ensure that they are in good condition.

• Avoid draining ditches, piers, platforms, and water plants and animals. These are unsafe areas to play in water.

Boating

• Use life jackets.

• Boating and alcohol don’t mix.

• Tell someone on land where you will be and how long you’ll be gone in case of an emergency. That way if you get lost or into trouble, help will be able to reach you.

• Take a boating course. This will teach you about navigation rules, emergency produces and the effects of wind, water conditions and weather.
