UNITY (AP) – A 38-year-old man died early Sunday when his mobile home burned before firefighters had a chance to extinguish the blaze.

Douglas Rich lived alone in the trailer on Cedar Lane, near Route 202, that burned, spokesman Stephen McCausland of the Maine Public Safety Department said. McCausland said Rich’s body was found in what had been the living room of the trailer.

“It appears he was trying to get out when he was overcome by smoke,” McCausland said.

A neighbor called the fire department after spotting the flames shortly before 2 a.m. McCausland said the fire was well under way when firefighters arrived and the trailer was “gutted and flattened.”
