FRYEBURG – Voters at the annual town meeting Saturday will be asked to put $100,000 into a new account to pay for capital construction projects and to pursue matching funds and grants.
The item is among the most expensive in the proposed budget of more than $2.5 million.
The infrastructure committee, co-chairmen by Webster Fox and Dick Krasker, recommends the creation of the account. The committee has identified a number of buildings which need to be built or expanded.
Selectmen and the Budget Committee recommend appropriating $50,000 to the account.
The infrastructure committee also recommends raising $55,000 toward the cost of the town’s revaluation, due in 2006. The total cost of the revaluation is estimated at $175,000. The Budget Committee recommends this amount, but selectmen unanimously oppose funding the revaluation now.
Voters will decide whether to establish the position of a full-time fire chief.
Fire Chief Ozzie Sheaff said increasing demands from insurance companies and the planning board, as well as new OSHA regulations, have created “a great deal of paperwork.” He pointed out that members of the Fire Department have volunteered “a lot of hours doing whatever needs to be done.”
There were 119 fire calls in 2003.
Selectmen do not recommend this measure. The Budget Committee recommends the creation of a study group.
Polls will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, March 19, at the town office to elect officials. Jim Dutton is running unopposed for a three-year term as selectman. Beth Griffin, Zachary Shivers and Marie Struven are seeking re-election to the SAD 72 board.
The town meeting starts at 10 a.m. March 20 at the town hall.
Last year, 300 of the town’s 3,500 residents attended the meeting, approving a budget of $2.1 million.
