PORTLAND – Fryeburg Academy senior Nick Lawrence, along with three other regional hockey players, has been named on the Class B West Players of the Year list for the 2003-04 season.

Cape Elizabeth’s Dan Rautenberg and Jeff Croteau join Yarmouth goaltender Alex Bubier and Lawrence on this year’s list. Lawrence was one of three senior transfers from New Brunswick and helped transform the Raiders from a team that failed to make the playoffs a year ago into Class B West and state champions.

Rautenberg finished the regular season with 30 goals and 22 assists and helped lead the Capers to a 17-3-0 season. Croteau, a smooth-skating junior defenseman who anchored Cape’s stingy team defense all season, finished the regular season with three goals and 14 assists and also played a key role on power play and penalty kill situations.

Bubier, a junior, helped lead Yarmouth to a second-place regular season finish with a 8-3-0 record, a stingy 1.70 GAA, and a .930 save percentage.

The players received special recognition at the Class B West League Award Banquet on Sunday afternoon. Greely coach Barry Mothes was voted Class B West Coach of the Year. Mothes helped lead the Rangers to one of the most successful seasons in the program’s history.

USM names softball captains

GORHAM – University of Southern Maine seniors Renee Heath, Darci Holland and Emily Forbes have been named softball team captains for the 2004 season.

Heath, who is entering her third year as captain, earned first-team All-Little East honors a year ago after registering team-leading totals of 50 hits, 28 RBI and a .379 batting average.

Holland has quietly emerged as one of the top all-around outfielders in the conference. Her combination of speed and strength enabled her to outrun would-be extra base hits or limit the opposition to singles. Offensively, she registered a .288 batting average with 19 RBI, 20 runs scored and was a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen base opportunities.

Entering her third year as the team’s starting second baseman, Forbes will again provide the club with strength up the middle.
