The main lobby and hallway at Livermore High will be used as a lounge area for students.

LIVERMORE FALLS – SAD 36 directors heard presentations from two groups of students last week and gave their approval to each.

Representatives from the Livermore Falls Youth Town Council and their adviser, Grace Eaton, told officials about their project to purchase furniture for a lounge area at the high school.

Since there is no room available for the lounge, the main lobby and long hallway by the locker rooms, where students naturally gather, will be set up as the lounge.

Working with the Healthy Community Coalition Youth to Youth Program, they met with Principal Rod Wright and developed a budget. The total cost will be $3,402.25 for one three-seat sofa, eight two-seat sofas and one end table.

The coalition will donate $1,000 to start the project and will match the students’ fund-raising activities. They have selected a pizza program and will make $5 on each kit sold. They will sell throughout this month with delivery on April 7.

Although the decision was made by this group, they are being supported by students involved in Peer Helpers, Jobs for Maine Graduates, and the Civil Rights Team.

The second report was from Laura and Cathy Howell and Denise Acritelli who are interested in forming a dance team at the middle school.

In introducing the students and advisers, Superintendent Terry Despres said this is a period when there is a lull in activities between winter and spring sports.

The program would run from March 30 to April 30, letting young people work together on something the school doesn’t teach. The proposal is for 10 to 15 students to be involved with a recital held at the end of April.

In other business, Despres announced contracts with Honeywell for all schools and noted that a new copier contract could produce about $20,000 a year in savings.

The board reviewed the 2004-05 calendar that will have Aug. 31 as the first student day and June 10 as the final student day with no storm days included. Graduation is set for June 4.

Students would have a full week off for Thanksgiving and seven school days off for Christmas in addition to the usual holidays and February and April vacations. Five in-service days are included from August through November.

Despres said the teachers association is now reviewing the calendar, and no decision has been made yet about having early release days.

March 26 will be an in-service day, he said, one which has already been scheduled. It will continue as that but he would like the elementary students to attend school so they can make up the day lost due to mechanical problems. For students in grades 6 through 12, there will be no school.
