Intermatic Inc. offers a variety of weatherproof covers available in a number of sizes, colors and designs, which can be used with virtually any outdoor fixture whether horizontal, vertical or single/double gang. For example, the Flexi-Guard Series is available with a clear cover enabling the user to see the plug before opening the cover and determine if flying insects have built a next inside. Additionally, the Guardian series offers die case, lockable covers for high-abuse areas such as schools or industrial facilities. These covers are available at most quality electrical distributors, home centers and do-it-yourself stores.

It’s a common fact that moisture and electricity do not mix. That’s why Maine is one of about a dozen states that has adopted and enforces a new electrical code (NEC406.8B) requiring weatherproof covers on outdoor electric receptacles – helping prevent moisture from seeping into outdoor electric sockets and causing a shock to anyone who touches the connection.

“Weatherproof covers are a simple and cost-effective way to protect homeowners and their families from the dangers of electric shock,” says Jason Hicks of Intermatic Inc., a manufacturer of energy controls and home safety and security products.

The new revision to the National Electric Code makes these easy-to-install outlet covers a requirement in all residential applications and most commercial applications. The code states that 15- and 20-ampere, 125- and 250-volt receptacles installed outdoors in a wet location shall have an enclosure that is weatherproof whether or not the attachment pLug cap is inserted. This includes everything from low voltage outdoor lighting, timers and bug “zappers” to swimming pool pumps, engine block heaters and power tools. If a building inspector identifies that the code is not being followed on a newly-constructed building, the construction process cannot be completed until the NEC Code cover is installed.

A weatherproof “in use” cover includes a plastic cover, base, gasket and mounting hardware along with inserts that enable the cover to be used with a standard duplex receptacle, decorator style or GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) receptacle, a toggle switch or a single receptacle.
