JAY – Tom White of Jay officially announced his candidacy this week for sheriff of Franklin County.
White, 52, is a detective with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department.
White became a reserve deputy for the county in 1987 and started full time in 1994.
He previously served as a detective and patrolman in Jay. Before beginning his law enforcement career, White was employed by American District Telegraph as a service and operations manager for the state of Maine. He also worked as a security manager for Sugarloaf Mountain Corp. in Carrabassett Valley.
White said his experience as a business manager and as a law enforcement officer led him to seek the office of sheriff. He said he plans to give attention to planning and develop better communications within the department to foster innovative ideas.
He also plans to adhere to responsible budget management and foster a united partnership with all the communities in the county.
Over the last several years White said he enthusiastically pursued several projects to benefit the people of Franklin County and to strengthen the working relationship between the Sheriff’s Department and other law enforcement agencies throughout Maine.
White counts among his accomplishments being coordinator of the Western Maine Criminal Intelligence Task Force, and co-founder and the grant writer of the Tri-County Property Crime Task Force.
White lives in Jay with his wife, Lisa, and their sons Moses and Samuel.
White’s older sons James and Joseph live and work in southern Maine.
