FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) – Pedro Martinez struck out seven in four innings and Manny Ramirez went 3-for-3 to lead the Boston Red Sox to an 11-8 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday.

Martinez allowed two hits, two walks and one unearned run and left with Boston leading 9-3.

“I felt pretty good. The first two innings (I felt) a little flat,” he said, “but then I picked it up again.”

Ramirez was just 5-for-29 entering the game but had two singles, a double and three RBIs. He drove in runs in the five-run second and four-run fourth.

“You could see Manny coming (along) a little bit, even just the last couple of days,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. “As you see our lineup play more together, I think you’ll see some innings like that.”

Pittsburgh had six hits, led by Chris Truby who went 2-for-4. He singled in one of the Pirates’ four runs in the sixth after J.J. Davis doubled in two.

But Boston already had scored five runs against Oliver Perez in 1 2-3 innings and four against Blake Stein in 2 1-3.

Gabe Kapler hit a bases-loaded triple in the second and Kevin Millar doubled in two runs in the fourth.

The Pirates scored two runs without a hit in the first on two errors by second baseman Carlos Febles. The first scored when Febles threw the ball into left field trying to start a double play. The next came in when Febles let Rob Mackowiak’s routine grounder through his legs.

Those errors extended the first inning and led to Martinez leaving after four innings and 63 pitches, 40 for strikes. He’s expected to throw about 80 pitches next Thursday against Minnesota.

“Once I step in the white lines it’s a game,” he said. “But at the same time, it’s spring training, same routine.”

Pitching coach Dave Wallace wants to see more intensity from Martinez before the regular season.

“I like to see the guys really geared up one time,” he said. “You like to have a little bit of accelerated intensity.”
