1909 – 2004

FARMINGTON – Lydia S. Sampson, 95, of Farmington, formerly of “Bayview,” North Main Street, Fall River, Mass., died Friday, March 19, at “Pierce House” Main St. Farmington. Born in Providence, R.I. March 9, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Herbert J. Piper and the late Myra I. Bean Piper.

She resided in Westport Point for many years prior to moving to Farmington in 2001.

She was educated at Wheaton College were she received her Associate Degree, graduating in 1932. She married Leonard Sampson in Wickford, R.I. in August of 1936. He passed away in January of 1999.

She worked as an assistant commissioner in the Records Office for the State House in Providence for many years. She was a former member of the Women’s Club of Fall River, Westport Women’s Club, and was a member of the 9th Street Day Nursery Board of Directors.

While residing in Fall River, she was an active member of the Church of the Ascension.

She was a direct descendant of Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island.

Survivors include a daughter, Sarah I. Lucas and her husband Richard of Hilton Head, S.C.; two sons, James J. Sampson and his wife Ella of Warrensburg, N.Y., and Dr. Robert L. J. Sampson and his wife Marti of Wilton; 10 grandchildren, Leonard Sampson and Elizabeth Sampson Jee, Susan Whittington, Sarah Richards, Jason Sampson, John Sampson, Ashley Sampson, Melissa Sampson, David Cramer, and Richard Cramer; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Roberts of Torrington, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years; and one brother, John Piper.
