NORWAY – Stone-Smart Post 82 celebrated the 85th birthday of the American Legion at its March meeting. The auxiliary served supper under the direction of Rose Moulton prior to the meeting. Marion Millett cooked the potted beef and Joyce Bickford furnished home-made biscuits.
The auxiliary had a birthday cake decorated as the American flag that they presented to the post. Following supper, auxiliary president Donna Pike gave Cmdr. Dave Tilley a gift check to the post.
The post has a membership of 157 veterans and 13 of those members have 40 or more continuous years of membership in the legion. Robert Sessions has 58 years, Vernon Brown has 54 years, Department 1st Vice Cmdr. Gene Bickford with 45 year and Bryant Gurney with 42 years. They were present for the celebration. Other long-time members unable to be present were Elmer sessions 58 years, Tim Heath 47 years, Harold Wiley 46 years, Neil Dow 45 years, Tom Wood and Malcolm Smith each with 43 years membership in the post, while Wendell Berry and Mike Record each has 40 years membership.
After the supper and presentations the post and the auxiliary each held meetings. Tilley conducted the post meeting. It was reported that member Roy McKay was a patient at the Togus VA Hospital.
The Norway Savings Bank has sent checks to sponsor a boy to attend boys state and a girl to girls state in June.
Baseball chairman Ray Brown told the gathering that the ball team is in the best shape financially than it has been since he has been on the committee. That means that the three sponsoring posts Norway, South Paris, and Oxford will not be asked for as much money to support the team this year, Brown explained.
Gene Bickford, Lee Millett, and John Morgan volunteered to be on a committee to plan some kind of a local event to honor the veterans of World War II on Saturday May 29, the same day that the Word War II monument will be dedicated in Washington, D.C.
Bickford, who spent several days in Washington along with 13 other state legion family members gave a report on the trip. The legion delegation met with Maine congressional delegation.
