TORONTO – Former Maple Leafs Fredrik Modin and Dave Andreychuk scored power-play goals, and the Eastern Conference-leading Tampa Bay Lightning pounded Toronto 7-2 Tuesday night.

Brad Lukowich, Ruslan Fedotenko, Brad Richards, Vincent Lecavalier and Martin Cibak also scored for the Lightning, who remained one point ahead of Philadelphia and two in front of Boston for first place in the Eastern Conference with 99 points.

Martin St. Louis picked up three assists to give him 89 points, tops in the NHL, and a new franchise high for the Lightning.

Tampa Bay, which had lost four of five games coming in, also took a five-point lead on the Leafs.

Alexander Mogilny and Nik Antropov had goals for the Maple Leafs, who fell three points behind Boston for first place in the Northeast Division.

Islanders 3, Capitals 0

UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Rick DiPietro made 17 saves for his second straight shutout, and Alexei Yashin had a goal and assist in the New York Islanders’ 3-0 victory Tuesday night over the Washington Capitals.

DiPietro stretched his shutout streak to 136 minutes, 58 seconds, dating to Friday’s 3-1 victory over Minnesota. He blanked Eastern Conference-leading Tampa Bay 3-0 on Sunday, and then stymied the Capitals to complete a three-game homestand sweep.

The Islanders extended their lead over Buffalo to eight points in the race for eighth place in the East. New York has six games remaining, while Buffalo will play seven.

Yashin set up Roman Hamrlik’s goal in the first period, distracted Washington goalie Olaf Kolzig on Adrian Aucoin’s score in the second, and netted his 13th goal just 1:17 later to make it 3-0.

The Islanders split the four-game season series with the lowly Capitals, a monumental achievement compared to how they usually fare against Washington.

Flyers 4, Hurricanes 2

RALEIGH, N.C. – Branko Radivojevic had a goal and an assist, and Simon Gagne also scored to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-2 victory Tuesday night that ended the Carolina Hurricanes’ NHL playoff hopes.

Carolina was eliminated when the New York Islanders beat the Washington Capitals 3-0.

Philadelphia’s Sean Burke stopped 23 shots to pick up his 303rd win, moving him past Turk Broda and into 18th place on the NHL’s career list. Patrick Sharp and Marcus Ragnarsson had the other goals for Philadelphia.

Bret Hedican and Craig Adams scored for the Hurricanes, who have won just one of their last seven home games. Kevin Weekes made 24 saves for Carolina.

Philadelphia went ahead for good with 1:11 left in the second period when Donald Brashear found Gagne all alone on the right side of the goal, and the left wing beat Weekes into the upper right corner for a 3-2 Philadelphia lead.

NEW YORK – Lasse Pirjeta had two goals and an assist and Jean-Sebastien Aubin made 35 saves as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the New York Rangers 5-2 Tuesday night.

Milan Kraft, Rico Fata and Kostantin Koltsov also scored for the Penguins, 8-1-1 in their last 10 contests. Three of those victories were over the Rangers.

Jaromir Jagr and Thomas Pock, playing in his first NHL game, scored for New York which dropped its seventh straight game.

Kraft and Fata scored first-period power-play goals to give Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead.

Kraft opened the scoring when Jonathan Sim, skating behind the Rangers goal, fed the puck into the crease. Kraft jammed it past goalie Jamie McLennan.

Fata deflected in Ric Jackman’s shot.

Jagr scored 32 seconds into the second period to cut the deficit to one as he knocked in the rebound of Jamie Lundmark’s shot.

Ducks 4, Predators 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Sandis Ozolinsh had a power-play goal and Petr Sykora also scored, and the Anaheim Mighty Ducks beat the Nashville Predators 4-1 Tuesday night for their fourth victory in five games.

With the victory, the defending Western Conference champion Mighty Ducks avoided officially being eliminated from the playoffs for at least one more game.

Vaclav Prospal added a goal and an assist, Sergei Fedorov scored an empty-netter and Steve Rucchin had a pair of assists for Anaheim, which avoided being swept in the four-game season series between the teams.

Nashville remained tied with idle St. Louis for seventh in the Western Conference and needed this win with only four home games left.

Devils 4, Panthers 3

SUNRISE, Fla. – Martin Brodeur became the youngest goaltender to win 400 games when Scott Niedermayer scored with 1:05 left in overtime Tuesday night, lifting the New Jersey Devils to a 4-3 victory over the Florida Panthers.

Turner Stevenson, Brian Gionta and former Panther Viktor Kozlov also scored for the Devils, who clinched their eighth consecutive playoff appearance with the victory.

Brodeur made 21 saves to reach the Milestone after failing in two attempts. The 31-year-old accomplished the feat in fewer games than anybody else. Over all, Brodeur is 400-215-105 in 12 seasons. Patrick Roy is the all-time leader with 551 wins.

Lyle Odelein scored twice for the Panthers, and Vaclav Nedorost also scored.

Blackhawks 2, Avalanche 2

DENVER – Tyler Arnason scored Chicago’s second goal of the third period with 1:40 left and Michael Leighton stopped 41 shots, helping the Blackhawks pull out a 2-2 tie against the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night.

Colorado scored just four goals in an 0-3 road trip last week, but seemed to get a spark from Peter Forsberg’s return after he missed 17 games with a groin injury.

The Avalanche had good puck movement early and plenty of good scoring chances, outshooting Chicago 43-30 – 11 by Joe Sakic.

Leighton made several spectacular saves in the first two periods, helping Chicago stay within two goals. The Blackhawks picked up the offensive pressure to start the third, and Jim Vandermeer cut the lead to 2-1 with a short-handed goal 41/2 into the period.

Arnason tied it by picking up a loose puck in the corner, deking past Sakic and beating Tommy Salo over his glove shoulder.

The Blackhawks had a couple of good scoring chances in overtime, but Salo poke-checked the puck away from Arnason on a breakaway. Leighton was just as good, stopping five shots in the extra period.

Forsberg provided a spark right off the bat, setting up Paul Kariya for a one-timer in front of the crease on his first shift. He later drew oohs and ahhs from the crowd with a pass between his legs and had a stuff shot from behind the goal pin against the post.

Forsberg also had a hand in Colorado’s first goal, drawing two defenders along the sideboards before slipping a pass to Rob Blake along the goal line.

Blake had two teammates to pick from and chose Matthew Barnaby, who one-timed it past Leighton’s stickside 11/2 minutes into the second period.

Steve Konowalchuk made it 2-0 midway through the period, punching in a rebound after Leighton stopped Sakic’s one-timer from the slot. The point was No. 1,400 for Sakic.

Salo was spectacular at times in his second start since being traded from Edmonton on March 9. His best of the first period came on consecutive shots by Eric Nickulas and Igor Korolev after a dump-in took a strange carom to just in front of the crease.

Salo also made a diving stop late in the second period and crawled back to his crease before the Blackhawks could get off another shot. That one drew a standing ovation from the crowd and a big tap on the pads from teammate Bob Boughner.

Notes: Colorado is 27-1-4-1 when leading after the second period. … Chicago goalie Jocelyn Thibault joined the team for the trip to Colorado and could play as early as Thursday against Minnesota. He’s been out since Nov. 7 with a hip injury. … Sakic has eight goals and 14 assists in 14 games. … Colorado D John-Michael Liles did not return after getting tangled with Chicago’s Scott Nichol in the third period. Liles’ knee was caught underneath when Nichol fell on him and he had to be helped off the ice. … Salo beat Phoenix 2-1 on March 14 in his first start for Colorado.
