WOODSTOCK – Edith Andrews Hathaway, 96, was recently presented the Boston Post Cane as the community’s oldest resident. Town Manager Vernon Maxfield and selectmen, Stephen Beis, Leon Poland and Percy Monks, made the presentation.
Hathaway was born Dec. 8, 1907, two years after the start of the canes by the Boston Post newspaper. Until 1930 only men held the canes. She is the 25th Woodstock resident to receive the cane.
Hathaway has lived in her home at Bryant Pond for almost 76 years, arriving as the bride of Harris E. Hathaway, who died in 1997. She graduated from Woodstock High School in 1925.
She has three children, Phyllis Jordan of Waterford, Harriett Estes of South Paris and Burton Hathaway of Bryant Pond, all of whom were present.
Also attending were four grandchildren, Reynold Jordan of North Yarmouth, Vance Jordan of Waterford, Deborah Millett of Oxford and Elaine Newell of West Paris.
Hathaway has 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
