1912 – 2004

MECHANIC FALLS – Lionel Indice Harnden, 91, of Mechanic Falls, crossed over to a better place Monday, March 22.

Born May 8, 1912, he was a World War I veteran. During the war, he was a pilot navigator and accumulated many prestigious medals, including the Purple Heart, two Distinguished Flying Cross medals and others.

After the war, he worked at the paper mill in Rumford and the Bates Mill in Lewiston, until retiring. He enjoyed gardening immensely and could always be found passing the time weeding the garden or on a rainy day, working on one of his many crossword puzzles.

He is survived by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
