Greens fielding

23 candidates

AUGUSTA (AP) – The Maine Green Independent Party is fielding more legislative candidates this year than ever before, party leaders announced.

Twenty-three candidates have registered for the ballot, 21 for the House and two for the Senate, party leaders said Tuesday.

Party officials said the totals are the largest-ever Green Party presence in the state, and also the largest per capita showing in the nation. State Rep. John Eder of Portland, the highest-ranking elected Green in the country, is among the party’s legislative candidates as he seeks re-election this year.

Ben Meiklejohn, co-chair of the Maine Greens, said the party is focusing on races where it believes its nominees can win this year.

Tax panel wants to pose questions

AUGUSTA (AP) – The Legislature’s Taxation Committee agreed Wednesday to ask the full Legislature to seek a state supreme court advisory on the potential constitutionality of a tax cap measure awaiting a statewide vote.

The citizen initiative championed by the Maine Taxpayers Action Network would cap property taxes at $10 per $1,000 of assessed value, based on values in 1996-97.

Should the Senate and House of Representatives approve a joint order to seek guidance from the justices, “we cannot say for sure whether they would respond,” Attorney General Steven Rowe told Taxation panelists.
