The armed robbery occurred late Wednesday on Main Street.

LEWISTON – An armed man robbed an Irving Mainway late Wednesday, leading police on a late night hunt through the outer Main Street area.

Nobody was hurt in the 11 p.m. heist, but police said the suspect threatened a store clerk with what looked like a handgun.

Police said it appeared the suspect made off with a 12-pack of beer. It was unknown if anything else was taken.

Moments after the robbery at 674 Main St., police began scouring the area in search of the suspect described as tall and in his 30s.

Officers in cruisers searched streets running off Main Street after the suspect was seen heading toward a nearby bank. A detective was called to the scene to begin checking the store for possible fingerprints.

A police tracking dog was brought to the area, but by midnight, the suspect had not been located.

Police remained in the Main Street area into Thursday morning after receiving tips that a suspicious man was spotted at a nearby car wash.

Investigators said the suspect maintained a conversation with the store clerk during the robbery. Detectives were trying to determine if parts of that conversation may lead to a suspect.

The suspect was described as a white man, 6 feet tall and approximately 175 pounds. He was said to be clean shaven, with receding blonde or red hair. He was wearing a denim coat at the time of the robbery and was believed to be on foot, police said.

Police were asking that anyone with information phone them at 784-6421.
