LISBON – Lisbon Fire Department’s new ladder truck was used for the first time Tuesday night to quickly douse a smoky fire at a large farmhouse on Summer Street in Lisbon Falls.

The fire, which spread from a woodstove into a nearby wall, was reported at 7:15 p.m. by the elderly occupant, Clarence Goddard, according to Fire Chief P. Sean Galipeau. He said the house was filled with heavy smoke when firemen arrived. The blaze was quickly brought under control before it could spread through the house and attached barn.

Firemen had to vent the roof and one window, which they covered with plastic before clearing the scene at 9:15 p.m. Loss was estimated at $2,000, and there were no injuries, Galipeau said. Damage was confined to one living area and Goddard was able to remain in his home.

Firemen from Lisbon and Lisbon Falls responded with help from Sabattus and Durham fire departments.
