Jonathan Albert, the 12-year-old Androscoggin County Spelling Bee champion, lost the state spelling bee held last Saturday. But he’s happy with his standing.
“I wanted to come in the top 10,” he said. “And I did.”
Albert, an eighth-grader at Holy Cross School in Lewiston, missed the word “agate” during the competition. He spelled it “a-g-o-t.”
The error put Albert in seventh place out of 16 spellers.
Brody Winn of Old Town won the spelling bee. He will represent Maine at the national bee to be held in Washington, D.C., in June.
