Maine swimmer wins 100 butterfly in the NCAAs for the fourth time.

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (AP) – Ian Crocker closed out his career at Texas by setting a world record in the 100-meter butterfly at the NCAA men’s swimming and diving championships Friday, winning the event for the fourth straight year.

Teammate Brendan Hansen also completed a four-year sweep in the 100 breaststroke, prevailing in 58.19 seconds at Nassau County Aquatic Center.

The swimmers were competing in a 25-meter pool, as opposed to 50-meter lengths they would swim in Olympic competition.

Crocker won in 49.07 in seconds, and the duo became the ninth and 10th swimmers to win four straight events in NCAA championships history. Crocker is only the third to win the butterfly four times. Mark Spitz of Indiana and Pablo Morales of Stanford also accomplished the feat.

Hansen is the second to sweep the breaststroke over four years, joining Steve Lundquist of SMU.

Peter Marshall of Stanford lowered the world record in the 100 backstroke to 50.32 while Florida sophomore Ryan Lochte set an NCAA mark of 4:04.52 in winning the 400 individual medley.

Doug Van Wie, Mark Gangloff, Fred Bousquet and Derek Gibb of Auburn combined for a world record 1:34.25 in the 200 medley relay.

Auburn, the defending team champion, now has 435 points heading into the final day of competition Saturday. Stanford is a distant second with 248, followed by Texas with 246.

“This is kind of bittersweet for me,” Crocker said. “I can’t believe I’m finished at Texas. I’ve been blessed.

“Now I’ll turn pro, and I guess my accomplishments thus far will be my portfolio for the future. One thing I’m happy about is that I’ll still be able to train with the guys at Texas for the Olympic trials.”

The trials are July 7-14.
