YARMOUTH – Velma F. Lovering, 94, formerly of Nevada Avenue in Portland, died Thursday, March 25, at Brentwood Rehab in Yarmouth with family members and close friends at her side.

She was born in Portland, a daughter of Charles W. and Ella M. Willey Welch. Velma was educated in Portland schools and was a graduate of Portland High School. Over the years she instilled in her grandchildren the importance of a good education, and how it would someday lead to a successful career. She started her working career at the New England Telephone Company. She put her career on hold to raise her two sons until they were of school age. She then went to work for Burnham & Morrill in the payroll department and retired from the family business, Lovering Exxon, on Veranda Street in Portland. She was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and a past matron of cornerstone chapter Order of the Eastern Star. In retirement she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, taking Sunday rides and working with crafts.

Velma was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Lovering, in 1994. She is survived by: two sons, Bruce N. Lovering and his wife, Emma, of Poland and Bernard L. Lovering and his wife, Brenda, of Standish; three grandsons, three granddaughters and eight great-grandchildren.
