JEFFERSONVILLE, Vt. (AP) – A Lamoille County man faces several counts after a weekend rampage in which police say he attacked a neighbor with a shovel and ski and a police officer with a baseball bat.

Police arrested Brendan Mayworm on a wooded hillside after he tried to escape by swimming the swollen Lamoille River.

Police said the incident began when a Jeffersonville man arrived at his home at about 11:30 a.m. Saturday and found Mayworm inside. The man went back outside to call 911, and Mayworm allegedly attacked him first with a shovel and then with a ski.

Police did not identify the alleged victim. Television station WCAX identified him as David Knight, an off-duty Stowe police officer.

Police pursued Mayworm across Jeffersonville and during that pursuit, he allegedly attacked state police Cpl. Ralph Chilton with a bat.

Mayworm was to be arraigned on several charges on Monday, including two counts of attempted murder.
