PORTLAND (AP) – An Auburn man who drove out on a frozen pond Monday to do some late-season ice fishing found out the hard way what warm spring temperatures have done to the ice.
Thomas Hoy, 48, drove his car onto Panther Pond near Raymond. The ice supported the vehicle’s weight for a while, and he got out before it went through the ice. Hoy walked back to shore.
Game Warden Jason Luce said Hoy is lucky. He said ice that goes through cycles of freezing and thawing can get honeycombed and weak.
Hoy has 30 days to get his vehicle out of the pond.
The ice fishing season ends March 31.
