LIVERMORE FALLS – Rhonda Drake of Livermore Falls was welcomed as a prospective member of the SAD 36 board Thursday. She will fill the rest of Russell Flagg’s term on the board as soon she is sworn in. She will also meet with Superintendent Terry Despres and choose committees to serve on.

Committees have been busy lately with one group working on fields and facilities and another on food service.

On April 1, food service will hear a presentation on an overall plan to have the district get out of the food service business and have it done by professionals.

Eric Rodzen was appointed to the Buildings and Grounds Committee and Fred Nadeau announced that fields and facilities had taken action on forming a 501(c)(3) for its fund-raising efforts.

He also noted that Buildings and Grounds had authorized Despres to get costs for an extension of the parking area at the Cedar Street complex and to start the renovation project at the high school.

The district is developing a comprehensive plan for a long-term facilities maintenance plan. Included in that plan will be how to obtain more land for Livermore Elementary School to provide for parking and playground facilities.

One goal for LES is to roof the older section of the building and to look at facilities utilization to make room for a full-day kindergarten next year.

At the high school, discussion is being held on redoing the front facade to enlarge the lobby and provide two public restrooms.

Directors approved joining the Maine Assessment Cooperative, which will help the district develop assessments as required by state law. Assistant Principal Jeannine Backus will work in the program.

The board voted to extend Bonnie Campbell’s leave of absence for a second year, accepted with regret the retirement of Richard Swanson and the resignation of Ray Cloutier.

Despres reviewed two bills, LD 1924 and 1921, before the Legislature, pointing out the portions of them which would be helpful or detrimental to the district.

As he concluded his review he advised the board to “stay tuned, it’s changing every day.”
