ORONO – University of Maine baseball freshman Ross Cantara (Biddeford, ME) was named the America East Rookie of the Week. The Black Bears split a pair of doubleheaders at New York Institute of Technology last weekend.

Cantara batted .714 on the weekend as he recorded five hits in seven at-bats and scored a run. He was 2-for-3 with a run in UMaine’s 7-6 loss to NYIT on Saturday. In the second game on Sunday, Cantara was a perfect 3-for-3. He saw action as the designated hitter in three games last weekend.

Cantara has seen action in seven games this season, starting four. He has eight hits in 15 at-bats with two runs scored and three RBI.

USM’s Bourque named LEC Co-Rookie of the Week

GORHAM – Freshman outfielder Ryan Bourque (Sanford, ME) of the University of Southern Maine baseball team has been named the Co-Rookie of the Week in the Little East Conference for games played fromt he start of the season through March 28.

During the Huskies’ recently completed 12-game Florida trip, the rookie outfielder hit .488 with 12 runs scored, two doubles, one triple, one home run and a team-leading 15 RBI. He hit safely in 10 of the 12 games, including the last four games at a .714 clip, and had seven multi-hit games. Bourque had five RBI in the Huskies’ 12-2 win over Frostburg State and four RBI in a game against Gustavus Adolphus College.

Howard and Hamilton earn Hockey East honors

ORONO – Maine men’s ice hockey sophomore Jimmy Howard has been named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week and freshman forward MIke Hamilton has been named the Superskills Hockey Rookie of the Week.

Howard stopped 29 of 33 shots in two periods of work against Harvared last weekend in the East Regional NCAA Tournament. He stopped 36 of 37 shots, including two in overtime as Maine advanced to the Frozen Four.

In the first game of the NCAA Tournament against Harvard, Hamilton scored the first of Maine’s four goals in the third period to comeback for a 5-4 win. In the Regional Final against Wisconsin, he scored the game winner at 3:27 into overtime.

USM pair garners LEC weekly softball awards

GORHAM – Senior infielder Jesse Becher (South Paris, ME) and sophomore pitcher Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, ME) of the University of Southern Maine softball team have been selected for weekly honors by the Little East Conference for games played from the start of the season through March 28.

In the first 12 games this season, Becher batted .472 with eight runs scored, three doubles, four stolen bases and eight RBI. She hit safely in all 12 games and compiled an on-base percentage of .548. Her two-out double in the top of the ninth inning drove in what proved to be the winning run in the Huskies’ 2-1 win over Western Connecticut State University.

Mainville compiled a 5-0 record with one save and a 0.71 ERA in her first six appearances of the season. In her sixth appearance, she has worked 39.2 innings allowing 29 hits, walked seven and struck out 29. She has five complete games, including a nine-inning effort to beat Western Connecticut, and a pair of shutouts.
