JAY – The selectmen’s meeting scheduled for Monday was canceled because two members of the board were ill. Agenda items will be discussed at the April 12 meeting.

Cable hearing

FARMINGTON – Selectmen have scheduled a public hearing Tuesday as part of the process of negotiating a cable agreement renewal. The existing 10-year agreement with Beeline Cable Television doesn’t expire until 2006, Town Manager Richard Davis said, but getting input from the public will help selectmen when it comes time for negotiations to begin. The hearing starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Farmington Community Center at 127 Middle St. This will give subscribers the opportunity to discuss what they like or dislike about the television service and provide input on any cable services such as high speed Internet access that they would like to see, Davis said.

Papers available

MOUNT VERNON – Nomination papers are now available for the following positions and terms: road commissioner, 1 year; tax collector, 1 year; treasurer, 1 year; town clerk, 1 year; selectman, 3 years; school board representative, 3 years. The papers are due back on April 24. The town meeting will be held at 9 a.m. on June 12 at the Community Building. Town elections will be held from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 8 at the Community Building prior to the meeting.

FARMINGTON – The Tumbledown Conservation Alliance will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, in the Ricker Addition 205 at the University of Maine at Farmington. The agenda includes the Temple lands on the market (near Spruce Mountain and Mount Blue), defining the terms of the endowment fund and the alliance’s budget for this year.

Benefit auction

WILTON – The Early Childhood Center will hold its annual auction Friday, April 2, at 6 p.m. in the Cushing School. Adrian Harris will be the auctioneer. Area businesses and families of the center have donated many items to be auctioned. Many of the items are handmade. The Early Childhood Center is a nonprofit organization, which provides early childhood learning experiences for local families. People can call 645-4488 for more information.

Help for caregivers

RANGELEY – A Health and Caregivers Expo will be held on Friday, April 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Congregational Church’s barn annex. SeniorsPlus and Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice said that people will be able to learn about the services are available to caregivers in Rangeley and the surrounding areas. They also can have a free bone density test and blood pressure screening. For more information, people can call SeniorsPlus at 1-800-427-1241 by Monday, March 29.

Grange potluck dinner

JAY – North Jay Grange No. 10, in celebration of its 130-year anniversary, will hold their open day program with a potluck dinner starting at noon on Saturday, April 3, at the grange hall in North Jay. A program with speaker State Master Steve Verrill will begin at 1 p.m. followed by musical entertainment that includes a variety of young performers on violins, piano and other instruments as well as singers. The public is welcome. Raffle tickets will be on sale for a quilt and afghan. A door prize will also be drawn.

Disco-For-Life

JAY – Back by popular demand, the second annual Disco-For-Life will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, April 3, at the Amvets on Main Street. The Disco-For-Life is a dance and raffle to benefit the American Cancer Society Relay-For-Life. Those attending are invited to dress disco and to come enjoy four hours of non-stop disco music and dancing. Literacy Volunteers’ Scrabble

FARMINGTON – Literacy Volunteers’ Spring Scrabble Fest will be held Saturday, April 3, in Ricker Hall Addition, Rooms 202 and 205, on the campus of the University of Maine at Farmington. Registration will start at 12:15 p.m. with game play from 1 to 3:45 p.m., followed by an awarding prizes. Pre-registration is $6 or $5 for seniors/students and it is $7/$6 at the door. Volunteers invited the public to come play Scrabble, eat goodies, have fun and win prizes all while supporting the local Literacy Volunteers who train tutors to teach adults to read and to function in society. There are more than 100,000 adults in Maine who have difficulty reading. Volunteers worked with over 100 students in Franklin County last year.

Longaberger Basket Bingo

FARMINGTON – A Longaberger Basket Bingo event will be held Sunday, April 4, at the Elks Lodge in West Farmington. The doors will open at 11 a.m. and the games will start at 1 p.m. The event, sponsored by the Farmington Elks Lodge, will benefit the eighth grade Hawaii Exchange Program at Mount Blue Middle School.
