WILTON – Planners will consider one new application when they meet Thursday. They will also discuss hiring a new code enforcement officer. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the town office.

William St. John and Margot Joly are proposing to operate a beer and wine store on Route 2 in Wilton. Sales will be off-premise only.

Planners will also meet with Town Manager Peter Nielsen to discuss the hiring of a new code enforcement officer. Current Code Enforcement Officer Brenda Medcoff gave officials her resignation earlier this month. Selectmen agreed to contact certified code enforcement officers in the area.

Medcoff is expected to leave April 1. She has worked for Wilton since former Code Enforcement Officer David Giroux resigned nearly 3 years ago after officials refused to increase his hours. The same issue arose for Medcoff.

About this time last year Medcoff resigned, but rescinded her resignation, choosing to stay on while pursuing work in forestry at the same time. Medcoff works part time as code enforcement officer for several area towns. She has taken on extra responsibilities with the town of Chesterville that will afford her more hours.

In her annual report Medcoff said that while she is resigning, she still feels the code enforcement officer hours in Wilton should be increased. Voters will decide whether this will happen at the annual town meeting in June. The Planning Board supports adding 8 hours to the code enforcement officer position.

Medcoff said the current 20 hours per week is not enough to take care of all of the duties as code enforcement officer. In addition she said the town is “a low paying municipality.” Medcoff said while it may be difficult to justify increasing the hours while the townspeople and officials are interested in trying to cut taxes and cut other budgets they should keep in mind that the code enforcement officer receives no benefits, vacations or sick pay. “By increasing the hours it will encourage a code enforcement officer to stay with the town of Wilton,” she said.

In other business, planners will continue their discussions of upcoming issues for the annual town meeting in June.
