LEWISTON – Gay Muslim activist Faisal Alam will speak at Bates College Monday night.

Alam, founder and director of an international lesbian and gay Muslim support group, will talk about the experiences of gay Muslims and will discuss Islam’s view toward sexual and gender minorities. The presentation is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Monday in the Muskie Archives.

Alam founded Al-Fatiha in 1998. The group supports lesbian, gay and bisexual Muslims and has nine chapters in the United States, as well as in the United Kingdom, Canada and South Africa.

Since its inception, Al-Fatiha has been featured in newspapers and magazines around the world and Faisal has received numerous recognitions for his work. In 2001 the Advocate selected him as an “Innovator” and in 2002 the Utne Reader selected him as a “Young Visionary Under 30.” He works for a national HIV/AIDS organization and resides in Washington, D.C.
