SOUTH PARISJohn J. Mooney, 80, of Peru, died Sunday, April 4, at the Maine Veterans Home in So. Paris.

A lifelong resident of the area, he made his home on the Auburn Road, Peru.

He was born in Rumford, March 18, 1924, a son of John and Mary (Bradley) Mooney, and had attended schools in Peaks Station, P.E.I., Canada

During World War II he served with the U.S. Army as a T5, Signal Headquarters Company Aircraft Warning Signal, 7th Fighter Command Army Air Force and included overseas in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, and was wounded on Iwo Jima in 1945.

For many years he worked as a Security Guard at Boise Cascade Paper Co. in Rumford until retirement in 1986 and then worked as a service clerk for Shop & Save in Rumford for over 13 years until retirement in August of 1999.

John was a Communicant of St. Athanasius-St John Church, a Life Member of Robert Shand Post # 1641, V.F.W. and a Life Member of Napoleon Ouellette Post # 24, American Legion.

He was married in Rumford on Jan. 31, 1948 to Eva M. Laurinitis who survives of Peru. Other survivors include three sons, Robert P. Mooney and wife, Linda of Steep Falls, John P. Mooney and wife, Deborah of Peru and James T. Mooney and wife, Lynne of Portland; a brother, Robert W. Mooney and wife, Ann of Rockland, Mass.; three sisters, Margaret Fitzgerald and husband, Gerald of Northeastern, Mass., Patricia Low of Braintree, Mass., and Emma Thibodeau of Rumford; four grandchildren, Robert Mooney and wife, Sherri of Steep Falls, Tracy Mooney of Steep Falls, Allison Mooney of Portland and Patrick Mooney of Peru; three great-grandchildren, Robert J., Lauren and Savannah L. Mooney of Steep Falls.
